I reamed out the shackle and used a 5/8" Grade 8 bolt. JRC mentioned a few years ago that they used to do this.
The result is no free play and the ski bolt probably will not break. Along with the SLT skies from newbreedparts.com it handles like a dream.

That is the point. The bushing and the original bolt is replaced by the 5/8" bolt.

Keep in mind a grade 8 bolt will shear before a grade 5 will, there is a Deere Racing Bulletin on this from back in the CC days. Although these were using the 1/2" or 9/16ths & the bushings. I personally sheared a " CAT " grade 8 - 9/16ths ( using a drilled out bushing ) bolt off on the Dator.

I've read that's a myth. Grade 5 will bend before it breaks. Grade 8 won't bend, it just breaks, but the breaking point is still higher then a 5.

One thing that is overlooked so far is the fact that the bolt, whether 5 or 8, is harder than the steel used in the saddle so without the bushing the saddle will wear very fast. Eliminating the bushing and going with a 5/8" bolt is a temporary fix to sloppy steering.

I wonder if a guy could use old wrist pins to make bushings out of, that & a grease zirk on the spindle would help

Wrist pins would be so hard to turn down I would think. I mean they are really treated well.

I buy bushings from MCM. But Deere still sells the original ones as they are also used on corn planters.

I bet there are at least 8 points of wear on vintage sleds that could use zirks.

This is the strange bolt that started it. I found this bolt in an auction lot I had purchased when an old country service station had closed.

I only found one.
I thought of Grumpy braking a grade 8 bolt while racing a Dator. I often wondered how great a driver would have to be to ride that fast over that rough a terrain to brake that bolt. So when I found this bolt I started to laugh and thought It could fit. It fit the saddle perfectly and I had a reamer for the ski yoke.
I agree with JDT The best fix utilizes a bushing. The ski yoke is where most of my free play was. The 5/8 bolt is not stock. It would be difficult to return the ski yoke to stock. But the SLT Ski is so phenomenal that I felt I needed to eliminate any free play.
Now I wonder about this SUPERTANIUM ALLOY bolt. The early days of Chinese bolt manufacturing?

That is a really cool head on that thing. It may be antique and not actually from China.

Sometimes it takes a while and a fair amount of work to eliminate any free play in the steering but your efforts will be rewarded well.

There are about 10 areas that need attention when working towards Zero Tolerance in slop.
