Datorfire is coming along

Post by Liquifire 4/6 »

Happy New Year, everyone! I've been working on this for awhile now and I'm getting fairly close to the point where I can take it all apart and send it to the paint shop. I just have to redo the rad surround (it looks ugly) and then figure out how to trim down the tunnel support braces the way there are on a Dator. Once it's back from painting, I'll try to get it back together as soon as I can because I do want to ride this thing this winter.

I finally am getting back to working on my Dator project which I hadn't touched since last January. I even had the opportunity to try out the John Deere sled rotisserie I bought a couple years ago. I had to build some adapters in order to use it on a bare chassis but it sure does work sweet. I have the chassis completely stripped down and have shortened up the tunnel/running board braces on the Liquifire chassis to the same height as the Liquidator braces. I straightened the dings and dents in the pan as much as I could but admittedly it will not be perfect. I did use some aluminum body filler in some spots and I sure do hope the staff doesn't chip off. I ordered some self etching primer which should be here next week and then it's time to get some painting done. I'll be putting a Rupp Nitro 440 Xenoah engine into it.

That will be a fun sled.

What are you using for a track and suspension?
Several Deere's
Several Kawasaki's

I am using this Polaris suspension. It's what they called the Dial-adjust suspension and it's out of a 1990 Indy Trail. I didn't want to use anything with too much travel because it would look out of place. But I wanted something with a more plush ride than the original skid.

I need something with a decent ride because I broke my back on this last January......my one and only ride of the year. I was layed up in bed for the better part of three months and wearing a very uncomfortable brace until the middle of May.

The track is a brand new low lug height Camoplast and is quite thin. It actually spins over almost as easily as the original cleated track. That is exactly what I wanted as I'm not looking for deep powder performance, but rather something with good durablity and decent trail riding characteristics.

I painted a few dash related items as well as my rad support last night and they turned out fairly nice.

I'm grateful to have my brother for company in my shop while I'm working on this sled. He's working on his own little project right alongside me. It's a cool Swinger that he picked up at Princeton last summer. I'll attach a picture of it despite it not being a John Deere. But hey, it's green and that's got to count for something.

The Polaris skids works very well on old sleds that needs a bit of better suspension.

I mounted a Xtra-10 on one of my Yamaha SRV:s, and it was a big differens from the original ProAction skid.

That Polaris suspension looks like it belongs in that SRV.....Nice Job! I hope my installation works out that well. Thanks for posting the picture of it.

I just finished putting the first coat of self etching primer on. It's drying pretty fast. Not sure if I should hit it again with the self etch or not? Looks like the coverage is pretty decent. And no runs that I can see so far.
I absolutely love the old rotisserie. It's a kinda crude looking thing but it sure makes a job like this a bunch easier.

Hope everybody is having a great weekend. Here's what I did yesterday. Today it was too nice to work in the shop so instead I hopped on my bike and racked up 662 km. Perfect riding day for a motorcycle but I'm starting to think snow already.
