New Trailfire Project

Post by Cdnturboz »

While looking for engine parts for my 400 I came across a I “think” 1982 Trailfire 440 (build date says Jul 81).

Looks to be pretty original - story goes an old man had it since new and it quit running on him / sat in a barn forever. Old guy couldn’t get it running after it sat and sold it to the second owner where it sat in a shed for 5 years again with nothing done to it.

Four hour drive later I got it off that guy for $350. Not sure what I’ll do with it yet - may over the summer try and get it resealed/cleaned up.

Air box and a few things are off and I’m sure there is some missing pieces.(seat was recovered and was just off of the sled)

Quick question - I know for my 400 I was able to find a NOS tach kit on ebay - is there a part number for the trailfires to look for?

Does anyone know if there are any airbox differences year to year or differences 340 vs 440?

Im missing the airbox and found one from a 79 340 - couldn't find an 82 parts manual to cross reference numbers, etc

The 340 and 440 have a different diameter restrictor on the intake tube. I believe they are available on eBay. If you look in the parts manual, you should be able to find the part number you need. Vintagesnow.com has the part manuals.

Thanks I looked on the vintagesnow link and they only had a parts manual for a 79 - wasn't sure if there were any changes by 82. You're right the only thing I could see on the 79 between a 340 and a 440 was the restrictor.

I found an airbox out of a 79 340 so if I purchase that I only may need to get the 440 restrictor.

Thanks for the link didn’t know that - looks like there appears to be no difference year to year.

The cold weather has hampered me messing with the 400 - so decided to start some more on the Trailfire. Going to take the engine out to reseal. Had good compression - 120 psi per side.

My question is which clutch puller do I need? I have one from my JD 400. Is it the same one required for the Trailfire?

Other than the actual crank seals - is there anything else I should be changing when I split the case? I’ve heard there are orings as well?

There are o-ring https://newbreedparts.com/products/kawa ... 1a0e&_ss=r

I usually take the approach of open it up and then see what things look like. Hard to say what you may find. If you are not hav8ng the crank rebuil you definitely need to check bearings and rods to make sure everything looks in check.
