72 JD 400 WILL NOT IDLE

Post by flacker36 »

Parts are in, the 027 points look slightly different than the 025's. Does anyone know if I put the 027's in & it really calls for the 025 will I damage anything. Every source (except one) that I have found recommends the 025 points for '72 400's

I did check the throttle shaft, no slop, tight as a drum.

Does anyone know the OEM # for the proper set of points for a 1972 John deere 400 with a KEC-340 engine?

Thanks!! I did end up going to JD & getting the part number which is AM52375. That # translates to 18000510 which is replaced with point # 025. I now know I have the right set of points in the machine.

Thanks for all the imput. Now back to seeing if I can get it to idle.

I am back to dealing with the lack of idle. The only way I can get it to idle is by having the high speed needle closed or just open slightly. I have adjusted & adjusted this carb with the same results every time. The only other thing I can think of is the seats for the needles are so wore out that you just can't tune this carb.

I need to try a different carb to see it it does the same thing.

Is there anything else I am missing??????

Update!

Took carb apart again. Cleaned everything with brake cleaner & cleaned & checked all ports. Looked over all gaskets & dia's & everything looks good. Checked springs & valves, everything looks good. Adjusted the metering lever within specs.
Put the carb back on set the lDM at one open & HSM at 7/8 open. Machine ran good & idled good at 2400 RPM. I let it run for a good 20 minutes. I also turned it off & on several times. I also disconnected the electrical & ran it that way- ran good. Thought I had it figured out, so I started puting some things back on.

I put another sping on the muffler & installed the starter. Figured I would try it again, so I did.

BACK TO NOT IDLEING & WANTS TO BOG OUT!

I DON'T KNOW WHAT TO DO NEXT - DO ANY OF YOU????

Does this machine have a new gas tank? If you are running a used tank, get yourself a flashlight and mirror. Check the topside inside of the tank for rust right in the areas around the red cap and the gauge. I had mine clean...

:( So I thought, the bottom looked brand new, however the top was the issue. The rust I had was like a cloud in the sky. Very hard to see, but when the engine died the fuel backed itself out of the fuel filter (running back to the tank) that is when I saw this rust cloud come out of my fuel filter. ITS VERY HARD TO SEE.

No it is the original tank. I did however remove it & used the oven cleaner method several times to clean it. The tank looked spotless of rust when I put it back in the machine. I did try running the machine out of a different gas can with the same results.

How about the fuel filter, have you changed it and ran it out of another container?

All the fuel line, inline filter & check valve in the tank are brand new.

As for the exhaust, I took it all apart & cleaned the inside and out with brake cleaner. I used an entire can of cleaner on the muffler before it started coming out not black. I used air compressor to blow air through it. I also ran it with the muffler off - still bogs & then dies.

Is there a way to check for muffler restriction other than what I have done??

I just checked the impulse PSI before it died out & it seemed good and strong.

I did check the upper half of the tank. When I cleaned it I cleaned the entire tank. It now DOES have some surface rust so I will try another tank with new gas.

This motor seems to have a mind of its own. I really appreicate all the insight you folks are providing!! I will check fuel system & provide an update.
