Hirth 220R6

Gezz, I shoulda nailed that one. I must have 10 of those Keihin sandwich carbs sitting on the shelf. From ten feet away, it's pretty hard to tell the difference tween a Tilly and a Keihin.

Hirth 220R6

Post by JDT »

I bought this sight unseen. I picked it up at night(very dark) and was told that it was a 70 with a 400 Hirth with a Tilly.

Most of the time the night purchases go south in the daylight but this one was just the opposite.

Sometimes you get lucky.

The only real problem, other than the lose of spark on one side, was the running board was gone on the right side.
Seams that a dead battery was left sitting on the the side and it leaked. The acid made the metal disappear from the strut to the snoflap.
I had a parts machine so I grafted a section of tunnel on.

The evaluation prototype sled is taking solid shape as it came from an old Scorpion dealer in Iowa. And like I said Scorp did not build any Mark III bubble noses in 71.

It had the 70 Rubber Drive 18" track under it when I got it. And of course it was junk.
I did the usual poly track conversion with new drivers, idlers and inside boggie spacing modificaltions. Replaced the snoflap as the acid ate that away also.

Todd, Back in 1972 we had an aftermarket CDI on our 650 Red Baron motor, Right now I don't remember what brand it was, it worked just fine & if I remember right it used the std coils but I might be wrong about that?? too long ago..
Any of you guys have any Keihin carbs marked R65CR or R44CR??? or any Keihin carbs with accelerator pumps either 50mm or 38mm.

50mm? Holy gas guzzlers Robin!

Never knew that existed that big Kenny.

I had a NOS 650RB once and sold it. Grrrrr. Wished I would not have.

Do you recall if it had two seperate trigger boxes and one CDI box?

On this 500 the trigs are outside and the box is underneath with the coils.

if I remember right it all was in a little box that could have been mounted under with the coils but we mounted the coils & the box on the outside of the motor to keep them cooler as this was a grass dragger. I think all there was to it was the the inner CDI coils mounted to the motor plate under the flywheel & the CDI box it self????

That sounds different than what is on this one. This system is all Bosch.

As it turns out the stator was actually OK even though the coil case was damaged.
Unfortunatly it cost me $100 to find that out.

:(

So I continued looking for a CDI Box and found one in NY from a guy that has a 1970 Blizzard Single. He sent me a used box and it arrived today.

Installed it and I have spark on both cylinders. Shot some mix in the carb and the big 500 Hirth roared to life first time in some 30 plus years!

:D

My photo doesn't really show the fact that there are actually two CDI boxes on this engine, one for each cylinder. I did cross test the two original boxes when I first started working on the sled over a month ago but failed to realise that the boxes have to be grounded to produce spark. I discovered that when I was working with the second stator. My left arm is still tingling!

So all is well now and the sled starts, idles and runs super. It did cost an extra $150 for the CDI but for something this unique it was worth it. Kind of like finding a Wildfire or IFS L-fire... who else has one?

I will be showing the machine for the first time at the Vintage Snowmobile Club of America 2008 Summer Show in Milbank SD coming up in June. And it will be at the 2009 Scorpion Homecoming Reunion and 50th Aniversery celibration held at Crosby MN next Feburary.

Also note that the featured sled at 2009 Reunion will be the 1975 Scorpion Whip.
So all you guys wax up your Blue Metalflake hooded Scorps and bring them to the show.
