RJ Carlson sled found

Post by DeereHunter78 »

I have been busy in the field and finally got a chance to catch up online. Jon while you are looking for pictures I wondered if you could find any of this sled, it was the other cross country registered to your father. I talked to him briefly about it at the hall of fame two years ago and he told me it was registered under his east coast address. Like Chuck I need a lot of pieces to get this thing back on the snow. It has always been my goal to have it back in race trim if Waconia features Deere some year soon. I'll attach a few pics of it as it sits right now.

I know Rich! Always up early....old habit from the territory days, I would have inventory checked before 8:00 AM dealer arrival, that allowed quality time with the key people in the dealership, up early today to vote at 5:30, at the shop at 6:30.....also am having fun with my CC that Chuck found! Small world! Jon

Just to set the record straight. I really cant take the credit for finding this sled. The credit goes to Craig Ekvall from east Bethal MN. I was in hot pursuit and he just couldnt take the preasure from me and he folded. Very long story on this one.

Jon... Would there be any special markings on this motor or anything unique that would seperate from another motor?
Kind of like a shell game here. There are 3 motors available and one of the 3 is correct for the sled. How can we tell?

Another thing on this sled is that it will be restored to race condition, not how it came from the factory. Resources???

Very cool find. Time to dig up some pics

I have seen a hood with a similar if not the same DEERE sticker on it. Could there be another sled with this DEERE decal? Or better yet where did the hood turn up?

Talked to Jerome Kretzman last night about the JRC Balsam Lake racer. It has ben confirmed visually again, First by the driver himself Jon Carlson, that this is indeed the real deal with their markings. Keep in mind that this was 30 years ago so remembering things gets a bit tough. With a little gentle persuasion, memories started coming back.

Great fun but now the work to rebuild begins. If anybody runs across pics or other info that would be greatly appreciated to help in the preservation of this historic sled. Thanks to all for the support from the members of this board and all the ETD race team.

No Joe Rainville, You cant have this sled!!

Chuck......Terrific that you spoke to Jerome, as mentioned I have a 100% 1978 CC that has all the original parts that I am happy to give you for the restoration, I'll be at the shop next weekend if you would like to pick it up! I'll try to locate some pictures, but I do remember the sled very well as we modified it with the big dual fill tank to skip 1 fueling at Balsam Lake. I also have a dual fill tank! Best Jon

Thanks for the offer Jon . If you were to walk me through this project it would be very much welcome. Not just understanding this sled and the Krentzman-Carlson Team but to also understand the race in general. Need to understand both to create a terrific restoration. Looking forward to this project. Thanks
