Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
i have seen 2 77-78 nos cyclone pans. I think one went on Ron Sonnek's 78 c.c.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
OK, now that we have decided it's a 77 or 78 pan instead of a 340/S, Now I have a dilemma, do I save it or install it on my original 78 CC, the pan on it has a bunch of dings & welding done to it & needs more welding now, so do I just weld it up again & say all the welds & dings have HISTORY & Nostalgia, or do I install the new pan???

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Guys,
I'm doing a little spring cleaning and am confused (no surprise here). I was wondering if I could use a cyclone pan on my 340/s? Problem is I have 2 '76 cyclone chassis, but the pans are different. 1) which is correct for the 76 and 2) which would be the one to use for the 340/s?

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Who's got time to spring clean?
My understanding is that when the original 340/s glass pans failed Deere offered a upgrade kit. It was the 76 Cyclone pan and bumper as they were already in production and available as replacements. All the 340/s sleds I have seen with aluminum pans have the reinforcement ribs in the side. I'm thinking the smooth sides didn't come out until '77 or '78.

Ribbed pan is '76, smooth is '77-'78.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Thanks guys. That certainly helps clarify things. The info was there all along, now that I've reread the previous posts a few times.
Now I'd like a few opinions (maybe this should be in a different post?)...
I intend to make this a rideable restore, not a trailer queen. It won't see a ton of miles, but I want to be able to take it on vintage rides and feel comfortable riding it at speed, having fun with it and seeing what she can do when asked. It has a very abused glass pan, but usable narrow bumper on it now. Should I fix the glass or go with the aluminum pan swap
Obviously the glass pans failed under cc racing conditions, but really how fragile are they? Am I asking for trouble by not making the swap. From the guys that have done one or the other do you look back and wish you'd done it differently? What did you learn? What were the problems you encountered?

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
Mitch, several of us have the John Deere bulletin that tells you exactly how to take 76 Aluminum pan and cut it down to fit a 340/S. I'd be glad to send you a copy. I want to concur with Matt. Only the 76 Cyclone/LF/Dator had the "ribbed" pan. Starting with 77 productions models and into 1978 the pans are smooth sided.

Re: 340/S aluminum pan without side ridges
DA,
Thanks for the offer, but I've got a copy already...I'm now trying to get a realistic guage on how fragile the glass pan really is/was. Clearly not ideal for racing, but would it hold up under general riding conditions, for example how you would drive #9 at a Waconia event or on the vintage challenge. I'd kind of like to use the glass pan and narrow bumper if I can. Either way I have a lot of work ahead of me, but I'd hate to bust a glass pan the first time out if they really are that fragile. Just throwing my thoughts out there at this point...thanks
