Lower gears in a LF

Post by S_Kyle »

As I wait for my seals to arrive for my 77 440 LF. I was reading the FTM I have and it says that the theoretical top speed will drop by 7-8 mph if I put the 21/39 set in. I belive that I have a set of 340 gears in storage somewhere.

As anyone done this swap in an early LF. If so, what were you impressions as far as performance goes.

Thanks
Scott

Scott,
I know one of the members here has a 76 340 cyclone with a 440 engine in it. His weight is on the heavy side and the 340 gears help out better with starting from a complete stop. If you do a lot of tight trail riding, it will be an improvement. If you do lot flat-out riding, the top end will suffer. By no means will the lower gears lift the skis, the early liquires were a heavy machine. Fuel mileage will also suffer slightly.

Fuel mileage will suffer. . It makes sense, but I am only getting 8 mpg in my other 77. I don't think I can afford worse mileage. I might try it and see if it is worth it or not. I can always put the 440 gears back in. Thanks for the info Pat.

Thanks
Scott
