340S hood opening up the "gills"

Post by 400brian »

If you are bored, a repro 340S hood is what you need. Working on opening up the gills, if I remember correctly, Gunga Don chickened out of this. The initial windshield trial fit looks to be an adventure as well! :bonk:

The gills on the opposite side of the hood are going to be tougher, need a lefty with a good shoulder. :bonk:

So, I decided to take a break, and install the Cannon Classic Sleds windshield. I marked where the tabs hit the hood, then started drilling a lot of 1/8" holes. The glass is thin enough that I could just push the bit sideways to elongate the holes into a slot. Then I wrapped a bit of sandpaper around a hacksaw blade, and smoothed things up. It took some trial and error, but I finally got things to fit like I wanted.

I then marked the six holes around the headlight, and drilled the hood for the Wellnuts. Should work :beers;

I had an original used windshield that came with the sleds. It looks just like the repro one. I was going to use it for the template, but I found it wouldn't fit the original glass hood I have! I stuck the tabs in the slots OK, but then it bulged out all around the headlight pod so much that you'd have had a *itch of a time screwing it down. Something would have broke.
I think I understand the issues Troy had with his, ( last fall ) a whole lot better now.

Left side gills to go, and the holes for the hood pin plates.

Ditto on same issues. Installing the windsheld was tough. I thought sure it would break trying to make it fit. DA

Brian,

Your handy work on the vents looks excellent!

Not to burst your bubble on the windshield but mine fit decent without the gasket too. Once the gasket is installed and you are trying to get those metal retaining clips over the windshield tabs and align the holes for the wellnuts it changes the angle on everything! Just make sure you are in the mood for a huge challenge when you do this. It's loads of fun! Good Luck!
