If no one answers here, that might be a good question for the guys at kawasakitrax.com. They used a variety of engine versions over the years. The Deere versions didn't change much.

The '79 Trailfire motor was different than the rest. The difference in the 2 is probably '79 and '80-'84. Don't quote me on that, but I'm thinking that's the case. The newer motor had a couple of extra ponies.

I've been away from jdsleds since the snow melted, but bought another Trailfire this morning so I had to log in and get a JD fix.

TA440A are 440 Trailfire engines, as I'm sure you're aware.
The fourth-to-last digit is the year code. D is a 1980, F is a 1982.
Very little change to the TA blocks throughout their run, but the F202 is the exception.
There was a piston ring change between 1979 and 1980, although the pistons are the same size and any matched piston/ring set should fit any cylinder.
The heads, case, and crank are the same through all model years.
The F202 had unique cylinders and head gasket. Same pistons, same case, same heads, though.

It would be interesting if someone knew what the difference actually was. Have you taken these engines apart? can you see any difference?

1980 Trailfire 340, bought in 2008 with TA440A-C202 engine in it, regular rider, 6,250 miles, LF rubber track
1979 Trailfire 340, bought in 2009, in pieces and rough cosmetic shape, 440 cylinders ready to go in (need pistons still), no odometer
