340 clyclone speedo problems
I just bought a orignal owner 76 clycone in great shape, I got it running and testing the results to find the speedometer is all over the place. I inspected the drive bearings and they seam good what should i look at next.

Sounds like the cable is binding, winding up, then unwinding. Lube the cable with a product for that, or graphite, something like that.

Re: 340 clyclone speedo problems
If it is a high mileage machine, chnaces are the main bushing in the speedo is worn out which can cause the needle to swing to full speed right away.

Re: 340 clyclone speedo problems
I too had speedo problems on my '76 340 Cyclone. I replaced the speedo and right angle drive. Thankfully I did. When I took the drive off, I saw that I had a bearing out on the drive shaft, that I never would've noticed. I had a big learning lesson with the right angle drive that I thought I'd share and maybe save you some time. I purchased what I thought was the correct drive for the Cyclone. The speedo didn't work, but the miles were counting down in reverse. After a 12 pack and a lot of head scratching over the paper work I received with the right angle drive, I realized the drive was for a SprintFire. Given the different mounting locations between the Cyclone and SprintFire, I finally realized the internal gears on the drives were in opposite directions. Rather than pull the drive off, I switched the internal gears, re-using the old gear, and she worked like a champ. Needless to say my speedo cable was good so i didn't have to re-route a new one. Thought I'd share my experience so you didn't have to drink as much as me to figure it out, even though that's half the fun!!
