Now Paul
If anyone did this for you, they'd be depriving you of the satisfaction of doing this yourself.
Besides all the fall farming stuff I have to do, My little brother ( he's 40 ) is getting married on the 21st. I'm standing up in the wedding, that's not a big deal, but he wants both my, and my father's, 55 Chevys out in front of the church.
Neither has run in a few years. So far, Pa has had to buy a new gas tank for his, I don't know what it is going to take to get mine running yet.

I'm waiting to find out if you've gotten this problem fixed yet as my X8 has the same problem. All last winter my son and I would change plugs every 10 mi then they would seem to go bad.We finally gave up as we couldn't keep it running long enough

Everything with the exception of the large screen is in the kit. This kit is an original Walbro kit. I will get it together this weekend. I will let you know the results. I bought the kit from Central Snowmobile also for an FYI.

The last kit I got was also Walbro, and also did not include the screen. The diagrams show that it does, but they probably stopped including it with the kit.

So today I dove in. Outcome????????????? I need a B.F.H. to smash something to pieces. The sled is now worse guys. I have torn the carb apart 6 times and rechecked myself on the rebuild.
Here is the problem my fellow Deere lovers!!
The sled will only run with your hand placed gently over the throat of the carb most of the time or it needs to have the choke on basically all the way to run for several minutes then the motor will load up and die. When the motor sounds like she is gonna quit due to possibly loading up I then shut off the choke and she idles back up and then runs smooth and then it will want to die, I then place my hand over the throat or close the choke to get the idle to come back up. What do you think guys??? I am almost clueless.
Plugs are wet= Rich carb
Wont run without hand over the throat of the carb=Lean carb, vacuum leak?
The instructions that came with the kit are pointing me to an out of adjustment metering lever. I have set this the way the directions recommend. +.005 to +.020 above the surface of the main body casting. A straight edge slightly interferes with the metering lever.

Sounds like you have an air leak, is your carb sealed good?
I'm starting to find out that sometimes I've been reading that you may have bad seals. Crank? Something in the bottom. Still, use the starting fluid to spray on the outside of the carb, base, head etc....
You will find the air leak if that is what it is. You have to do this when it is running so it sounds like you need three hands. Good luck!

Paul, I'm thinking.
I hate this particular type of problem personally, it's so damn frustrating.
Is there any posibility you lost the spring out from under the metering lever?
You did try adjusting the idle mixture screw?
Will it rev up?

Well after a day of drinking coffee, and mountain dew the following took place
The fuel line from the gas tank to the carb was replaced again with a new line, new clear inline fuel filter, a new impulse line installed with a very heavy gauge nylon line, 2 like new BR9ES's, compression checked at 180lbs on both cylinders, points were cleaned, I couldn't check the gap due to not having a feeler gauge, points should be set at .014 +/- .002. Carb taken apart one more time and checked. Added 1/4 bottle of HEAT to the gas. Drank a cup of coffee again, put on some music and cranked her up. No good again.
I forgot to mention, I went through an entire can of starting fluid to check for leaks, nothing was found to be bad.
Then I got to playing around, the manual stated to set the low idle and high idle set screws out at 1.25 turns. I have to laugh at this one. The low idle is now set out at about 5 turns and the high idle is about 2.25 turns out. Now guys this thing runs consistent at 2500RPM's and plenty crack on the throttle. Engine now starts with only a half pull when hot, yes I did say a half pull, she is running half way through the initial pull. Now I know I have the high idle to set yet when the white stuff hits the ground.
The dilema= 5 turns out on the low idle why??
2.25 turns out on the high idle why?
180lbs compression should be 125lbs. or so. Reasons so high, could be deposits of crap on top of the cylinders or stuck rings possibly. This may be why the carb settings are off from the manual. She isnt a new sled by all means.
After all this was done the sled sat and idled fine for about 15 minutes, I pulled out the plugs and here you go guys..........light brown!!

I'm not sure what it going on, but that isn't right. You have the needles backed way out, and it sounds like it is still running lean. It should NOT be able to idle for 15 minutes. It SHOULD flood out after a few. I think there has got to be an air leak, or the carb has some junk really jammed in somwhere.

You mentioned that it should flood out after 15 minutes?? I hope that Deere didnt let these come off the show room floor like this or do you mean that with the screws out this far it shouldnt idle for 15 minutes. I cant say its lean now, the plugs are light brown as everyone has mentioned. The sled in the past ran like a lawnmower (smooth) now it sounds like a chainsaw, with much more power too.
The exhaust does smoke and there is some oily residue spitting out the exhaust manifold/muffler spring coupler too. Which really doesnt mean anything.
