Ahh! Stripped spark plug on CCW 340 head! (looking for head)

Post by cpolaris502 »

Grrr, I was putting a spark plug back in tonight and I guess I tightened it a little too tight on the clutch side head. Not as tight as I would on anything else since I can tell it doesn't seat as firm as my newer stuff but it still stripped.

I am hoping somebody here can help me out that may have a parts sled or something like that. It's a 1974 400 with a CCW KEC 340. The left (clutch) side head.

BTW: First post, this site has been amazing so far for finding all the info I've needed.

is there any way you could put a thread insert in it , i rescently took a 340/s intake to my machine shop buddy that had a broken shroud bolt in it . someone had drilled it out kinda crooked and crammed a sheet meatl screw in it .he drilled it out and installed a larger thread insert in it and salvaged the part . just a thought wade

I've checked out helicoils and they can be pretty expensive, like $100 so I'd like to stay away from that route if I can find a good head to replace it with.

That would be awesome if you could find me one in your stash, john! I can get you the JD part number if that helps or whatever you need.

you are right ,a new head would be the best fix for sure , i wouldnt reccomend a helicoil necessarily , but a much thicker thread insert would work too , you wouldnt have to buy their tap also and can be purchased through mcmaster carr or msc and they are realatively inexpensive ,wade

I believe such an insert as lwb is referring to is called a keensert (sp?). However you need to be sure that you know the correct threads per inch and the thread pitch of the spark plug threads. Also if you were to drill out and put in an insert be very careful that the insert does not protrude through the bottom of the head. I would recommend just finding a different head.

It's a 340/5. Hopefully it's what you have and will work...

I purchased a spark plug thred chaser years ago from Leslie at the local AutoParts store.
It is duel ended for both 14 and 18 MM. Cost was $15.
I chased the heads on every sled I do.

Never use a plug with questional threds!
