Sorry for the long delay, just pulled the 102c off the 800 for rebuild. You guys are right, there is nothing on the bottom side of the cover plate that retains the bushing. A mini tube of loctite is supplied with the new bushing from Comet. I didn't press this one in yet because I want to clean the cover plate first but it looks like it should fit in pretty easily.

Matt, was yours "staked" on top, just not the bottom, or was your cover not staked at all? The cover I did had it staked on both sides which was supposed to hold the bushing. I didn't get a tube of Loctite, but then again, I had an old bushing... not new.

It was only staked on the top.

Part 2: I got the 101c off my 800 and opened up the can yesterday on the bench. Wow what a filthy mess. It has been said that this is a major reason the cans are no longer used. I cannot believe the amount of fine powder dirt/grime/carbon, whatever you want to call it.

Here's what the inside looked like after just blowing it out with compressed air. I guess that is one benefit of not having an open face, as the 102's take quite a bit of work to get clean.

Now here is the interesting part. Take a close look at the rollers and fly weights. I was amazed at how flat spotted they were, and how the weights were completely grooved on one side and worn flat on the curved portion of the weight. The pivot pin was worn thin as well. I cannot believe I could even drive this sled with the condition of this clutch. It wore this way on all three weights. I guess this happens, but I was simply blown away that it could still work like this.

So now the work will continue to get the spider off, replace parts, and put it back together. I cleaned the can completely on the inside, and gave it a fresh coat of paint to pretty it up.

unless this sled is strictly for show & you want it to be correct, throw that shiny cover away because the clutch runs too hot with the cover on, I believe there is a Deere service bulletin on doing just that...

I've been considering going down this path of replacing the cover bushing in the origional Deere cover plate. The bushing is staked on both sides on my cover plates. Has anyone put any miles on one of these cover plates after replacing the bushing? Were there any problems created when you pushed the new bushing past the stake marks?

Nick, I ran about 50 miles on my 102c on my 800 last year with the new bushing. I did not see any problems with it, and it doesn't appear to have moved in the cover plate. I currently have the clutch off because I'm doing an engine rebuild, but it looks just like when I tapped it in.

I think if you just heat the cover plate up first, then use a socket of the right size and tap from the top, it comes right out the bottom. Takes a little effort. I did the reverse in putting the new bushing in. Maybe it should sit in the freezer overnight like I did with the moveable face bushing... might help. You can maybe even try locktite in the cover so when it is tapped in place it helps secure it more? Reusing the Deere plates is definitely worth it to me.
