Pulling A Clutch Without Stripping It

Post by mikehjd »

What is the best way to pull a clutch without stripping it? I had a clutch on a 79 trailfire that stripped when my local sled shop tried to pull it. He tightened it up and it stripped. He has been doing this for years so I don't think he did anything wrong. I have a few sleds that I want to pull the clutches but am scared that they will strip. Some come off easy but others seem to be stuck tight.

Mike i like to use grease or tranny fluid and if that does not work. I use a propane torch and heat the sheave lightly and then use the puller on it !! I hope this helps ! Good luck!

I stripped mine out once and was using the grease method! I believe sometimes these things are just stuck. I have heard that if you just tighten the puller up(not stripping it out tight) and let it sit over night, some have woken up to it off the sled.

i have had luck leaving them over night with tension on them, using heat as well and tapping the puller with a hammer loosens them up as well and you can tighten them up a little tighter after you tap a few times on it. Or the last resort cut it off
