What's up with this thing?

Post by 80spitfire »

I pulled the chaincase cover off of my Dator tonight to take a look at the chain and the gears and I was pretty surprised with what I saw. Instead of having the standard tension blocks on it, it had a roller set up like a modern sled. You can tell by how it looks that it was probably homemade. I'd say they did a pretty good job myself. So the question is where did this come from? Was this something used on the later selds that someone added? Or is it something that somebody made up for racing? Either way it definitely isn't the way that parts catalog says they came stock. Let me know what you guys think.

Thanks,
Brian

Looks like a racer mod to me. I know one of my dators were out out if the Winnepeg due to a broken (scissor) tensioner. That setup is similiar to a 80 LF setup.

Looks homemade, in 78 we had an update for the CC to use a 80 Liquifire roller tensioner with a mounting bracket & everything needed including a template in the kit. See CC Race Bulletin # 4, 6 Jan 78.
I do have a few of these kits made up. They can be used to up-date the Cyclones, Liquifires, Dators, & Trailfires to the newer style tightener ( you will have to change the chain cases on the 76 sleds as they used the floating tightener & don't have the pin in them, so at that point it would be advantageous to update to the newer liquifire chain case that is setup for the roller tightener )
Note: You do have to use a longer chain than the same gearing as in the Fine Tune Manual for the gears listed in that book.

Wow that's a pretty cool looking kit. If I was making it into a rider I'd definitely do that! I think I'll keep this one on it though since it looks like it was probably made when it was raced.

It does look to be a good workable setup & as they say " if it works, don't fix it "
One thing I've leaned about the roller tightener ( I'm sure this is the same for all roller tighteners ) This needs to be done when tightening the chain, there is a place where when rolling the shaft 360 deg you will have a loose spot & a tight spot in the chain.. What you have to do is find a happy medium between the two places, I hope I said that so it can be understood..

No, and I'm not sure why the picture came out on it's side. The chaincase really is in the sled in the right position LOL.
