Friday's Looselugnutz "Cameron Amber Memorial Poker Run" is being modified in an effort to attract more participants. There will the the "normal" poker run ride and one where you'll spend more time on the trail and less time at the watering holes. And of course there's always the "Friday Night Fishfry" that I will host again this year. We (jdsleds) will be making a very important announcement that evening as well... hope you all can make it. I'll be working on a head count when time gets closer.

We are planning to participate in the ride with the champs for the first time. Will be bringing the 340 s that I raced in the Winnipeg St. Paul race in 1975. I do have some questions , The first one is this is the first time I have run a cleated track in almost 40 years and I was wondering if most people run studed tracks and carbide wear bars on the skis?
Another question is regarding helmets, I did have my John Deere helmet that I used in the race restored this last winter but I understand it is not safe to ride with it so I am in the market for a new helmet.. I'm considering buying a full face helmet with the electric shield and I was wondering if there is any suggestions . I was looking at helmets on the Internet and it says there's one model that you can wear goggles with the electric shield and I was wondering what the purpose of that would be ?
Thanks, Glen
Glen, I would check with the St. Germain, WI Chamber of Commerce about parking the motor home. Here's their website: http://secretsofthenorthwoods.com/

That will be awesome to see your 340s on the ride! I didn't run studs or carbides on the ride and did just fine. They don't go that fast. As for helmets if you restored your old helmet it will work just fine as for new helmets an electric shield only works if you have the proper wiring to power it.
Will the 340s have enough capacity to spare to power up an electric shield and if it does where would a person tap into the system . Maybe the new helmets have good enough ventilation that you do not need an electric shield ????
A fresh set of carbides on the skis makes the corners a little less white knuckle. Picking the track is up to you. I have run the Vintage Challenge 7 times on the X8, without any picks. We always run into a few corners that are icy and make you hold your breath.
I run an original Deere full face helmet. Yes you are supposed to throw them away every 5 years or so. I run the original Vari-shield, but run it open much of the time. My observation is the the goggles are a pain, the guys are always wiping the fog out or something.
Several of us found the 340/S to dart so bad on a hard pack trail that it was scary, That is why several have switched to the plastic ski set-up.
