Kec 340 CCW engine questions

Post by Metallica19991 »

Yo, i have a kec 340 ccw engine and i wanna know how i can test these parts to see if these work.. I am getting spark so the coils r good.. but does that mean all the condesners and point work as well? also.. theres a red and white wire coming out from underneath the flywheel. do i hook the coil that has the white wire up to the white wire? and the coil that has the red wire up to the red wire coming out from underneath the engine? which wire should be to what piston. cause right now i got the red wire coil to the PTO side piston and the white wire coil to the mag side. Is this right? cause i switch them before and i still cant get this damn thing started.. help would be app.. Thanks

If you are gettng a nice blue spark that can jump a 1/4 gap, the coils are good. We coverd the correct hook up of the red and white wires last night in chat. You could also have a carb problem or bad crank seals. Spray a small amount of premix into the carb throat and try and start it. I would also do a pressure test to determine if the crank seals are bad.
Did you ever check the compression?

No i didn't check the compression.. but it seems as if it has good compression.. the piston rings have never been replaced ever.. and its been sitting for over 20 years. is that it?

problem solving a non-running engine involves a sytematic approuch.
-Good Spark
-Fuel delivery(clean fuel filters, clean carb)
-Good compression ( over 100 psi )
-Good crank seals

What did you check? Are the plugs wet after trying to start it.

I don't want to get too far ahead here...but if the flooding problem is chronic, if it keeps doing this, it may be that your carb is over fueling the engine.

Do you have a Walbro carb?

Does the pulse line from the side of the carb to the fitting on the crankcase have fuel in it? It shouldn't have more than a hint.

It's possible that the carb is the problem, but make sure the wires are hooked up correctly, and that you have good, consistant spark, and that the flooding persists before messing with the carb.

Since you have flooded the engine, it is also possible that you have fuel fouled the spark plugs. I would check all the things everyone has mentioned and try a new set of plugs as well.

Ok. i bought new spark plugs and hooked them up.. then i switched the coils. IE red goes to PTO side, White goes to Mag side.. and she fired up real nice.. and well yeah it now works great. theres no backfire out of exhaust anymore.. but i was wondering what you guys would say the fuel ratio is? i have it 50:1 but i just dont think thats enough oil... the carb doesn't seem to flood the engine.. but i think it was the plugs.. they were over 25 years old.. im not surprised.. but yeah whats the fuel ratio? the engine is a kec 340 ccw engine (made in japan)
