80' Trailfire 340/440 Chaincase
So we bought two JD's last year, didn't use them much last year. We're taking the chaincase apart for the upcoming winter and figured out its scratching the casing. And the tensioner is a made-up one. So i cant find a diagram of the whole chaincase so i can see what parts are missing. Does anyone have a diagram of a 1979-1980 JD Trailfire 340-440 Chaincase?

That diagram is a little confusing because I don't believe you will have items 9,10,11,12,13. That's the roller tensioner that wasn't normally used on the trailfire.

Thanx a bunch. But yea i dont have 9, 10, 11, 12, and 13. It doesnt have a whole for 5 and 6. It has a pin and a slot for a tensioner. The guy i bought this JD off of one made his own up. So i don't know what it looks like. What is number 7?Matt wrote:That diagram is a little confusing because I don't believe you will have items 9,10,11,12,13. 7 looks like the tensioner i have. The chain doesn't seem to be tight enough. Its still pretty looseMatt wrote:7 should be your tensioner.

There are different combinations of gears, and chains you can run. I would start by counting the number of teeth on the top and bottom sprocket, and also count the number of links in the chain. You can then compare what you have to what Deere recommends in the service manual. If you have too much slack with the tensioner installed then something is not right.
