Awesome cover!

The skis on the sleigh look likely to be correct for the 340/S.

My suspension; the nose wheels aren't installed in this photo, looks like one is laying there on the bench.

Suspension on the right is a Liquidator heavy suspension.

The one on the right I found in a shed, but the front arm is shorter & it has a single shock so am not sure it will fit the 340S. The one on the right can have 4 wheels attached on each side of the slides, which I thought we ran in the cross-country races because of marginal snow in places.
The one on the right is not a 340/S suspension.

The correct driver is on the left. One center wheel.

I noticed a couple more peculiar things on the 340S today. Was it a requirement for cross country racing to have the snow flap enclosed on the sides. Also there is a 4th bolt in the flangettes in the chain case. Was the extra hole in it from new or was it drilled in later & what would be the purpose of it ? Does anyone have a list of upgrade recommendations published by JD to prepare the machine for cross country racing ?

I got some more parts rounded up; want to thank Shaun Booth & Brian Henrion for 2 tracks, NOS rings, tool kit, Parts book, wiring harness, & a belly pan.
I ordered from Recreation Supply Co, Saskatoon - engine gasket set, coils, CDI .
They didn't have a stator , I would like to put in a new one if they are available somewhere.

The 340/S racing tips pages have been floating around here for years. Everything from reinforcing the plastic pan, to lowering the skid in the tunnel.

I'm wondering if they ever got posted here?

Fourth flangette hole??? I sure don't remember that as a modification or mine would have the fourth. It does not. Your snowflap is unique, I've never seen another like that and it was not a "race tip modification" The 340/S did not come with a rear bumper, only the hand grips on the side. Most likely because the glove box door located at the rear of the seat would have trouble with the rear bumper in place. I added the rear bumper on my 340/S because it makes it soooo much easier to pickup from behind. The hand grips suck because they're tight to the seat making it very hard for a gloved hand to use it. I have all the 340/S race papers and would be glad to share just send me a PM with your address.

With all the help that I have been getting to get the 340/s out on the snow it looks like it will be a very good possibility it will be ready for the once in a life time event ,so I phoned in today to register.
There is an oops, in our haste to get the engine apart to get the crank done the pistons were not marked properly, and by just looking at them it is hard to tell which way they go in. I don't have a 340/s service manual ,but in the Cyclone book it says they must be marked when you take them out to make sure you get them back in the same way. Any suggestions to get this thing back together properly.

The 340/S pistons are not marked in any way I know of, my recollection is that there is only one way they can be installed ( orientated ) that will keep both ring gaps out of a port.

The 340/S Service Textbook just says that mechanically the RS/2 is similar to the production engines. I do not have my SM2100 shop manual in front of me at the moment.

Perhaps there is a better answer, but I'm thinking that if you locate the ring pins in the grooves of the pistons, mark the location on top of the piston with a felt tip pen, then compare that to the port locations, it may become obvious.

I've done this a couple of times, and I don't remember it being a problem. Let us know what you find.

In this photo, it appears that the top ring is facing the intake side.

Maybe this picture will help. The ring end gap lines up with the tear drops in the intake ports.

Thanks to James & Troy for the tec info.
Also thanks to Don for emailing the Service Textbook.( sorry we didn't let you know that it came through ok.) We have it in a folder ready for the shop.
As you can see in the picture the end gaps line up inbetween the ports. When I gave the piston a half turn both end gaps lined up with the ports. So it's obvious which way the piston goes in.Then I noticed a faint mark I had put on the piston, but had almost disappeared when I cleaned it. Next time I will mark it better.

HELP :wall: Any one out there running twist grip on a 340s.One of mine is missing and the other one is shot. Any suggestions where I can get replacements :?: If not, any ideas on what would be the best alternative to make up a set? Running out of time to get the sled back together for the Feb 14th ride, so any suggestions will help complete the project on time.
