72 Muffler
I just purchased a 72 500 to ride and pull my kids with. A friend into Polaris vintage sleds helped me get it running, but is is extremely loud. Can anyone offer advice on if this sled is supposed to be so loud? I think I need a new muffler, but don't know much about vintage sleds. I would appreciate anyone that could help or may have a solution. Thanks from a newby.

Re: 72 Muffler
See if the muffler is bad overall or if you may have a failed ball joint. You can cut the old joint off with a chop saw and weld on a new one, like I did on my 81 LF yesterday.

Re: 72 Muffler
Both my '72 500s are crazy loud. It could that the mufflers are a bit worn out after 38 years. Wonder if it is possible to cut the muffler apart and put new packing in? If they had any to to begin with.

Re: 72 Muffler
You have no visible holes on the outside? I have no idea what might have been inside one of those mufflers, but typically a 2 stroke engine needs some type of calibrated exhaust to provide the correct back pressure. For example, a Trailfire muffler looks exactly the same as one for an 80 to 84 Liquifire but they have a different internal structure to help tune the engine. In short, a delicate balance is maintained between noise suppression and engine tuning to maximize performance on all fronts. To call it a muffler is a bit of a misnomer because it's really an expansion chamber designed to govern the engine back pressure and minimize noise.

Re: 72 Muffler
Only '74 295/S and the '75 JDX8/800 received any type of tuned expansion chamber style exhaust on the mid engine JDX/00 series. The rest were just a pipe with a muffler. Though they will not run very well with the muffler unhooked. Found that out when the exhaust spring broke on my 500.
MnStreaker if your not concerned with originality and want to save your kids hearing a muffler off newer JDX/00 might be quieter. My '74 JDX6 is not nearly as loud as my 500. You will not be able to find a nos one cheep but might be able to find a good used one.

Re: 72 Muffler
Thanks for the comments. Would someone have a NOS or used muffler off of a newer JDX/00 that they would be willing to sell so I can try it on my 72 500? I am more concerned about my kids hearing that the originality.

Yeah I was talking about the Ebay Item. I knew your muffler was a '72. Looks nice. Can't believe it still has some paint on it after 38 years.

Re: 72 Muffler
I'm surprise that your guy's 500s are so loud;that strikes me as weird because my 72 500 isn't really all that loud. Heck, my Spitfire is louder than it. I wonder why that is that mine is quiet. Oh well I guess I'll just be happy about it lol
