Re: 1980 Trailfire 440
Your dried up 30 year old crank seal cracked on your test drive.
Change them now or you will never ride it again as the engine will be junk.

A chunk of 2x4 and a bench vise works well. Lube the outer edge and go slow to be sure it is going in straight.

Re: 1978 spitfire, clueless please help guys!
Many years ago I worked on a Spitfire that did the exact same thing as yours. Idle but wouldn't rev. Replaced CDI and the same problem. After several days of frustration I borrowed a box from a working Spit and put it one. Problem gone! I recall a post a year or two ago on this forum where the same ...

Re: 1978 340 cyclone
Two weeks ago 77 340 with 500 miles and very clean sold at a local auction for $600.
Last week a 77 440 rough sold for $45.
Both had electric start.
Personally I feel the 78s are worth more because they look so cool with their graphics package.

Re: 1978 Cyclone 340 clutching issue
Sounds like it is only firing on one cylinder.
A twin hitting on one can sound fine at idle but will have little to know power to move.
This would also explain one side being drenched in fuel when you took out the plug.
