2 x 4 and a rubber mallet will save you a bunch of time.

Change them now or you will never ride it again as the engine will be junk.

A chunk of 2x4 and a bench vise works well. Lube the outer edge and go slow to be sure it is going in straight.

Both had electric start.

Sounds like it is only firing on one cylinder.
A twin hitting on one can sound fine at idle but will have little to know power to move.

This would also explain one side being drenched in fuel when you took out the plug.
