Trailfire cylinders
I am doing a crank seal job on my 80 trailfire 440 and have found the cylinders to be in poor shape. It appears the last person decided to put the pto crank seal in without splitting the crank as it's all bent in a perfect circle that looks to be left by a socket. The PTO side piston had a hole just...

Re: Airbox question.
From what i know they aren't so much an air filter as they are an air silencer. Without one installed the rush of air into the carbs is quite noisy. If you are to run without them i believe (someone correct me if i'm wrong) would require some jetting changes. With it installed there is a bit of air ...

Re: Control block & switch upgrade?
I have also done the same with my 79 spitfire not hard at all to do. Just take your time with switching the wire connector, not hard but don't want to break anything. However i think my brake block has a bad stop light swich as my brake light is on at all times whether brake is applied or not does n...

Re: Spitfire electrical problems???
I don't believe i remember seeing the CDI boxes in the new breed parts or not, but i bought one for my 79 spitty here: http://www.psep.biz/store/john_deere_snowmobile_cdi_boxes.htm It didn't look exactly like the original, but it mounts the same, and plugs are the same. It runs great since i put it ...

Re: carb rebuild question trailfire 440
Unscrew the idle speed adjuster and tighten just to the point it starts to raise the throttle valve, then give two full turns. That will get you to a point it will start. Have you checked compression in both cylinders and possibly that the crank seals need to be replaced.

Re: COUNTDOWN to the HOF
So far I'm planning on being there, for years my dad and i have been talking about going up, but something always seems to come up that weekend and we can't make it. I'm really looking forward to making it, and looking forward to bringing the trailfire along.

Trailfire carb setting
Looking in the service manual it said during carb assembly that air screw should be two turns out, then during the cable setting it said air screw should be 1.5 turns and in the carb spec chart it shows one turn where should air screw be? This is an 80 440

Re: new carb seals, still leaking..?
My 76 400 was leaking fuel from between the plates when i rebuilt it last year, took a couple times to disassemble and reassemble, but i finally found a small bur on the metal from a screwdriver when i took the plates apart. I carefully cleaned that up and it was sealed from there on out.

what size needle and seat?
1980 Trailfire 440. Just wondering what size the needle and seat are? It appears to be the short style? Never seen one without the clip that holds the needle in like this one before. Thanks!
